The Savvygen™ Flu A, Flu B & RSV test allows the qualitative detection of Influenza A (Flu A), Influenza B (Flu B) and/or Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) by real time RT-PCR in Nasal swab, UTM. The product is intended for use in the diagnosis of Flu A, Flu B and/or RSV alongside clinical data of the patient and other laboratory tests outcomes.
Influenza A and B viruses cause the majority of viral lower respiratory tract infections. Elderly and compromised individuals are especially at risk of developing severe illness and complications. Influenza viruses are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Seasonal influenza epidemics impose a heavy burden on society, with 3–5 million cases and 250-500 000 deaths worldwide every year. The resulting economic impact is large and includes both direct and indirect costs. After an incubation period of one to two days, the illness has an abrupt onset, with chills, fever, myalgia, headache, and anorexia. Pneumonia is the most important complication of influenza. There may be primary viral pneumonia, secondary bacteria pneumonia, or a combination of both. The influenza viruses can be transmitted from person to person through nasopharyngeal large droplets and aerosols and by direct or indirect contact.
Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is divided into two major groups, A and B, based on antigenic and genomic differences. RSV infection causes mostly a cold-like illness. But it can also cause bronchitis, croup, and lower respiratory infections like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. RSV is transmitted via large nasopharyngeal secretion droplets from infected individuals. Several types of laboratory tests are available for diagnosis of RSV and Influenza infection. Antigen detection tests and culture are generally reliable. However, RT- PCR assays have been shown to be a more sensitive and specific diagnostic tool for the detection of Influenza A, Influenza B and RSV viruses.
The Savvygen™ Flu A, Flu B & RSV test is a ready-to used test which contains in each well all the necessary reagents for real time PCR assay in a stabilized format. In addition, an internal control allows the detection of a possible reaction inhibition. The amplification of the Flu A RNA target sequence is detected through the FAM channel, Flu B RNA target in ROX channel, RSV RNA target in Cy5 channel and the internal control (IC) in HEX, VIC or JOE channel.
